Hi, it's Fill here! A favourite hobby of mine is travelling to new places and right now I'm lucky enough to be checking in from the Amazon forest. What an awe-inspiring place! It is jumping with life and full of food. Do you know what I've found out? A lot of what we eat first started growing here: oranges, bananas, tomatoes, corn, potatoes, pepper, coffee, chocolate, cinnamon, sugar cane, vanilla, cashew nuts and more.
Planet Earth is an amazing place! Did you know the Amazon forest is the largest rainforest in the world? As well as providing lots of food and medicine, the Amazon, like all forests, soaks up things like car fumes (carbon dioxide), which keeps the earth cool. Forests help the Earth stay healthy. Because the Amazon forest is so huge it is often called "the lungs of our planet."
So, why do we need to save the environment? It sounds like it's an order!
The Earth's environment is made from many elements that all fit together like a puzzle. There are renewable resources, which include forests, trees and fish - things that will grow back if we don't use too many at one time. There are also non-renewable resources that the Earth takes millions of years to make and if we use them now, they will not grow back. Things like diamonds, oil and metals.
Planet Earth keeps giving us heaps of renewable and non-renewable resources. We use these resources to make stuff; and in most cases after we use it and then we just throw it away. If we use too much of one thing a part of the environment puzzle is damaged or lost and we will have an unhealthy Earth!
Fill's fact file: On my travels I have noticed some things aren't growing back. Everything we do makes a mark on the environment. We have created big holes that have been emptied of metal and drained of oil; we are making massive rubbish dumps and taking too many trees from forests. The environment is starting to suffer.
Planet Earth is the number one place in the entire universe for us to live. The Earth's resources are for sharing with everyone and while they need to be used to make things we must also keep reserves to maintain an acceptable balance for the environment to remain healthy. It is our job to make sure we never run out of anything we need.
